Alliance calls for rapid implementation with sufficient funding and personnel

Munich – The Bicycle Alliance (Bündnis Radentscheid) is pleased about another great success: in today’s plenary session on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, the city council accepted the demands of the two citizens’ petitions in full: for the specific Downtown Cycle Ring and the general Munich Bicycle Infrastructure. The Bicycle Alliance sees this as confirmation of its extremely popular and successful goals and measures and of the will of the citizens, which was clearly expressed only three weeks ago with around 160,000 signatures. The city must now tackle the first measures swiftly and make sufficient funds and personnel available.

With the decision of the two citizens’ petitions, the state capital is acknowledging the sharp rise in the proportion of bicycle traffic and the fact that more and more people are using bicycles as a means of everyday transport in Munich:

At last we have binding targets: thanks to our successful citizens’ petitions, the city has committed itself to implementing the measures for bicycle traffic as far as possible by 2025 and to completing the planning accordingly by then. The first steps must now be taken quickly in order to demonstrate a serious affirmation of the will of the citizens.

In Munich, everyone should feel safe on a bike, from eight to eighty. We need space for a safe cycling infrastructure. The city has accepted our demands to redistribute space in favor of cycling — but not at the expense of areas for pedestrian traffic, local public transport, and urban greenspace.

The city has recognized that an expansion of the cycling infrastructure is only feasible with sufficient financial resources. We demand that the funds for local mobility be increased to 30 euros per inhabitant per year. No other means of transport can achieve so much with so little money. The people of Munich expect the city to implement their demands quickly. To achieve this, the city must implement at least 30 additional positions as quickly as possible.

With the strength of 160,000 signatures, we can now begin implementation. No traffic measures may be planned without considering cycle travel. We, the Bicycle Alliance, will be vigilant to ensure that we get not just lip service and words on paper, but that cycling in Munich becomes safer and more convenient as quickly as possible – everywhere and for everyone.  Our public space must be reconsidered and redistributed.
